About the Film
The Wizard of Oz is one of the most influential movies of all time. So iconic, many of the film’s making-of tribulations have themselves become legendary. But one story of the beloved classic has yet to be revealed… until now. The creation of Over the Rainbow is, in itself, filled with Hollywood drama, heartbreak, scandal and magic.
Around the world, across cultures and generations, everyone has a connection to the song; but unlike other musical hits, its songwriters are not well known. Song of the Century explains why, revealing the dramatic, true story of composer Harold Arlen and lyricist Yip Harburg: what cultivated and influenced their unique musical voice, how they came to work on the film, the struggle to find a rainbow in a black-and-white world (“rainbow” never appears in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum), and the monumental ways Over the Rainbow continues to influence art, celebrities, culture and entertainment.
Produced by Aaron Harburg (Yip Harburg’s great-grandson) and directed by Oz historian Ryan Jay, Song of the Century will inform and captivate all audiences with the final bit of uncovered history from the making of The Wizard of Oz.
